After leaving school, Mary went on to study Drama as her specialist subject at Bretton Hall College of Education in Wakefield. After graduating from Bretton Hall, Mary began teaching Drama and English at Secondary level in Chesterfield. Two years later she was Head of Lower School Drama at Westfield Comprehensive School, in Sheffield. Later Mary went freelance — teaching Drama Workshops to both children and adults in a wide range of venues.

During this time Mary would find herself using and exploring her improvisation techniques in drama, theatre and film-making with many different groups of people. These groups ranged from physically and mentally disabled adults, the North East Derbyshire Young Peoples Theatre, Equity actors, and innovative Shakespearian Drama Workshops with pupils from various Secondary Schools.

At the same time Mary began developing her own style of writing and performing which in turn would become known as “The Travelling Storyteller”. She has 32 plays in her current repertoire for children aged 3-7 years and 7-16 years, and tours extensively throughout the year.
